The Man in the Moon

One of my babies favorite books is 'On the Night You Were Born' it talks about how the world celebrates when you are born. There's a picture of a moon, smiling and a line about how the moon whispers your name on the night you were born. I drew in Kajal's name on the pages, floating through the beautiful pictures and we always read the words, followed by her name... celebrating the special gift that she alone is. She asked me if she could see the moons face and I told her of course she could, if she looked really hard. Sure enough, one day not too long ago in Boston, we were walking through the park and saw a luminous full moon suspended in the night sky.

Oh, Mommy, look, do you think we can see the man in the moon? I don't know, but we can try. So she looked and she looked and then she jumped up with a hoot! Mommy, I see him, I see him! I see the man in the moon!

You do? What does he look like? Oh, he's got a beautiful smile... see... see Mommy. Look at his eyes and his smile. So I looked, and I looked and after a while, I could swear I saw the smile too.

Kajal was sad as she fell asleep the other night. Mommy, can I tell you something? Of course, baby, anything. The teacher was reading a story about the Moon today and I raised my hand, I told her that I knew the Moon, I saw his face smiling down at me in Boston.

What did the teacher say, honey? She told me in front of the whole class that I was wrong, that there is no such thing as a man in the moon, there is no smile and no eyes. Just a blank moon. Mommy, didn't I see the man in the moon?

Hmmmm.

Yes Kajal, you did. You know how we talked about believing? About how some children believe in Santa Claus and others don't? And that's okay. But when you believe, Santa comes for you and when you don't, well, maybe your parents find ways to surprise you but it's not the same. Maybe your teacher just doesn't believe and that's okay too.

But he was real, right Mommy?

Yes baby, I think he was. You know why?

No, why?

Because God made the moon and the sun and the stars and the whole wide world and I believe that it was his smiling face you saw looking down at you, from the moon, that night in Boston.

Ahhhh. Yes, Mommy, I think it was God too.
